69 AESTHETIC APPARATUS/DOOMDRIPS
“We’ve done a large series of prints under the umbrella name of Doomdrips,”
says Michael Byzewski of Aesthetic Apparatus. The gorgeous, inktextured
prints are made on heavy, archival stock and can be found at the
firm’s site; titles include “Fist of Doom,” “Dial D for Doom” and a greenprinted
“DoomBuddy—Mister Tibbetts Project X.” Each of them has a
beckoning bull’s-eye front and center.
“The title of this particular print is ‘Oppendoomer,’ simply
because the gentleman depicted is Mr. J. Robert Oppenheimer,”
says Byzewski, the designer, illustrator and self-described doom-bringer
behind the project. He says a wide variety of stuff that had
a big impact on him as a youngster came into play on paper here.
“You know, fear of ghosts and nuclear war. That and skulls and
large droplets and lightning bolts.” Inspired by “doom-related
activities as well as the delayed, but still-oncoming apocalypse,”
the print evokes the gamut of pre-apocalyptic emotions and
afflictions, says Byzewski: “Anger. Enlightenment. Confusion.
Random crying. Influenza. I would describe it as ‘doom-filled
and totally good for America.’” But beyond that, he won’t say
much. The significance of the drip-shaped bull’s-eye covering
Oppenheimer’s snout and gob? It’s a secret. by Romy Ashby
