The Aesthetic guys had already done one concert poster for The Weakerthans
when they learned the Canadian band was coming back to Minneapolis.
“So,” says Michael Byzewski, “we talked to them and got going on
the poster.” The result portrays both beauty and sadness, black on gray,
with a kitten in a single lighted window.
“A lot of [The Weakerthans’] songs portray a sense of loneliness,
particularly the song ‘Night Windows,’” Byzewski says of the
band’s new recording, Reunion Tour. “There is also a song titled
‘Virtute the Cat Explains her Departure,’ which is a sort of sequel
to another song about Virtute on their previous record.” The
poster was inspired by these songs, but it also makes a nod to the
work of Edward Hopper, the king of glimpses into melancholy
windows. The Weakerthans seemed to be very happy with the
poster, Byzewski says, adding that because the band members are
all so polite, there is really no way to be sure. “The biggest challenge
was getting that enormous cat to stay still on the ledge when
we took the photo,” Byzewski says. “We lost eight cats and an
intern dressed as a cat in the process.” by Romy Ashby
