67 THE SMALL STAKES
“I do quite a few posters for Bimbo’s 365 Club in San Francisco,” Small
Stakes designer Jason Munn says. “I was pretty excited to get a chance to
design a poster for Daniel Johnston.”
Until the documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston cannon-balled
the manic-depressive 46-year-old nonesuch from musical
obscurity, Daniel Johnston was a crazy genius flourishing in Austin’s indie-music underground. He worked at McDonald’s,
recorded his own music in his parents’ basement and spent a lot of
time raving. Thanks to medication and the successful documentary,
he’s been on an even keel and touring. Oodles of fans half his
age love him to pieces.
Munn’s poster to promote Johnston’s show at Bimbo’s was
largely influenced by the title of that documentary. “I respond
to simplicity and clarity,” Munn says, and those two qualities are
apparent in most of his poster designs. His biggest challenge in
this particular design was over-thinking the tear across the top of
the head. “I tore off the tops of a lot of profiles, which wasn’t working
for me,” he says. “I finally decided to try a few without looking,
and one of those worked much better.” by Romy Ashby
