66 THE SMALL STAKES
Jason Munn has come a long way from designing posters pro bono for local
bands. But that sensibility remains in his work, which has the sort of
glow to it usually found in love-labors.
Munn has a large following for his screen-printed band posters,
and record art had a big influence on him as a kid. “That and skateboard
graphics were my introduction to art and design,” he says.
Munn has a way of finding the elements he needs in the music
itself and getting it down in rich, tactile graphics. These posters
are works of art. “The process could consist of anything really,” he
says, “illustration, collage, photography or just type.”
Munn’s elegant Shins poster was done through the Richard
Goodall Gallery in England. “They work with venues and management
in the U.K. to have posters made for shows,” he says. As
far as Munn is concerned, all that matters is that the image he
creates works as a good introduction to or representation of the
featured band. “I don’t think there is any one way to go about
that,” he says. by Romy Ashby
