63 PLANET PROPAGANDA
Created as souvenirs for the Cooper-Hewitt’s National Design Triennial,
these cute little 3-in. Dunnys, called Ribeye and Cheeze, were commissioned
by toy manufacturer and triennial honoree Kidrobot. “All of the
design firms in the triennial were asked by Kidrobot to submit Dunny designs
for a special edition to be produced for the Cooper-Hewitt,” says designer
Travis Cain of Planet Propaganda.
The original Dunny—both the character and shape—was designed
by Tristan Eaton, but it was Cain’s job to come up with a new
incarnation for submission. “My first idea was Cheeze,” he says.
“We’re in Wisconsin. I had to represent.” It must have been close
to lunchtime, because after cheese Cain thought of meat, and Ribeye
was born. “Kidrobot liked the pairing of meat and cheese, so
they decided to produce both of them,” he says. “To give them a
little twist I gave each Dunny a suicidal accessory—Cheeze has a
cheese grater and Ribeye has a meat cleaver.” What Cain describes
as the wide-openness of the project made the job fun. “I knew that
I could do nearly anything I wanted, as long as it would work on
the shape of the Dunny,” he says. “It was cool and daunting at the
same time.” by Dana Rouse
