62 BILIĆ MÜLLER STUDIO
Dora Bilić and Tina Müller met as students at the Zagreb School of Design
in Croatia. Having discovered many shared interests in design, they
founded their studio after graduating in 2003. In 2007, they were invited
to participate in a Croatian Design Society exhibition mounted around
the topic, “Self(re)interpretation vs. Selfinterpretation,” showcasing works
by designers who had been awarded prizes at the society’s 2006 exhibit.
For their new project, Bilić and Müller interpreted the exhibition
brief through a reinterpretation of their previous year’s project,
which had offered attendees a unique opportunity to create new
patterns on clothing with textile stamps of Bilić Müller-produced
illustrations. The reinterpretation of that project changed things a
bit, the studio reports, “so that verbal concepts, related to the concept
of the 2006 exhibition, are to be found on the stamps.” Everyone
who visited the 2007 exhibit was invited to create an authentic
souvenir by using the stamps to mark a white T-shirt or a cotton
bag with phrases such as “authentic authorship,” “candid reinvestigation
and conceptualization” and “ethical virtues.” Equal parts
design, art and parlor game, the wood-handled stamps and everyday
textiles offered a timeless aspect to an idea that feels inherently
modern. by Dana Rouse
