STEP INSIDE
As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

DESIGN 100: Miscellaneous (cont'd)

61 DESIGN GUYS
Sometimes a great notion is for everyday and not just for special occasions. That’s the gist of the Everyday Eames promotional brochure, attached to a sample kit loaded with examples of everyday items made out of very nice paper. From stationery and business cards to elegant, textured chopstick-sheaths, each sample project included in the kit contains a subtle reference to an original Eames work.

The premise, says writer/designer Barry Townsend, was to reintroduce the Eames Paper Collection to those designers who might still think of it as reserved for special projects. Townsend and his co-designers set out to show those people the light. The kit demonstrates the many ways in which Eames paper is ideal for any number of assignments. The Eames Paper Collection, by Neenah Paper (in collaboration with the Eames office), was inspired by the work and philosophy of legendary designers Charles and Ray Eames, whose now-classic designs were intended for everyday use. “Working around such a rich design heritage will always set a piece apart from the competition,” says Townsend. “I think we all get a special charge from working on the Eames Paper Collection pieces—for many of us, Charles and Ray are personal heroes.” by Dana Rouse
