The 87 images in the flipbook were taken at the annual holiday parade in Lewes, Del., a favorite destination for Shelton and his partner Jeff Fabian. “Lewes bills itself as the first town in the first state,” explains Shelton, alluding to the fact that it’s the oldest town in the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. “And this was the town’s 100th holiday parade, so everyone went all out”—reason enough to set up a camera on a well-situated street corner and have a glass of wine. While the parade imagery is charming in an old-fashioned way, the faces of friends that appear mid-flip tell another tale. “One of them is a friend of ours who was diagnosed with cancer last year,” he says. “She’s just such a strong person; she kept working all the way through chemotherapy, and that was while she was caring for her chronically ill brother.” So while this cheerful little book is meant to be fun, by capturing a moment in time it also serves as a sort of tribute. by Tom Biederbeck
