As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

49 EPSTEIN DESIGN PARTNERS
John Okal describes Russell Lee as a “no-nonsense, hardworking” photographer
who makes stunning, sharp and starkly poignant portrait work.
Lee turned to Okal and Epstein Design Partners when he needed an identity
system that spoke to his dedication and vision as an image-maker.
Early in the design process, Okal decided to exploit the differences
between Lee’s personality and the work he creates—how his
“urban, rugged exterior” contrasts with his pictures. The intent
was to simultaneously capture the essence of Lee’s personality and
the depth, beauty and plain elegance of his work in a single concept.
The design team decided to use three different paper stocks
and colors for business cards, envelopes and letterhead. They settled
on khakis and creams, plus laser engraving, a unique use of
color and highlighting to portray the richness that defines Lee’s
practice. Using warehouse-style fonts, the letterhead is strong and
simple, portraying the strength and subtlety of Lee’s photography
and successfully embodying the “no-nonsense” personality of the
man behind the imagery. by Tiffany Nicole Slade
