57 WERNER DESIGN WERKS
“With a name like Shout, it seemed too obvious to have loud type, so we
decided to make it a little more refined. I wouldn’t say it’s what you’d call
quiet; it may be bold, but it’s stylish,” says Sarah Nelson Forss of Werner
Design Werks (WDW), speaking about the identity work for Shout Radio
created by this St. Paul, Minn., design firm.
Mark and Joe, the two guys who make up Shout Radio, have
distinctly different personalities. To get that point across, the
designers created caricatures of the two as amiable, old-time
radio vacuum tubes. WDW’s approach to the design of Shout’s
identity package is equally lighthearted. WDW art director Sharon
Werner explains, “The business cards are designed so that
each [partner] has both cards … Mark has cards for himself as well
as for Joe. That way he can hand out one double card that covers
them both, or just his own. The perforated card sets are bound on
the left for one of them, on the right for the other, so that each
person’s cards are always on the outside and the easiest to tear
off.” by Sheree Clark
