54 PAPRIKA
As publishers of challenging fiction books by international authors, Les
Allusifs needed to put a unique face on its new book series. Seeking less
gloom and more spirit, the publisher chose Paprika to execute its vision.
“When a client gives you this much space to work with, it gives you the
possibility to try different things, to experiment more,” says Louis
Gagnon of Paprika. “This is a great context to work within.”
Paprika capitalized on strong links between illustrator Alain
Pilon’s work and the editorial selections to create a winning identity,
brimming with consanguinity. To establish distinction on the
bookshelf, the designer chose to counter bright covers with recurring
red and black—Les Allusifs’s corporate colors—and a precise
typographic grid. As a result, this fresh body of work manages to
arrive with a classic sensibility. “Les Allusifs is a small publishing
house that likes to distinguish itself from the big, more commercial,
less art-oriented publishing houses. Their identity program
gives them the possibility to distinguish themselves while keeping
their communications at an intellectual level,” says Gagnon.
