52 MARKATOS | MOORE
To capture the essence of concrete for their client Concreteworks, Tyler
Moore and Peter Markatos distilled the material into four basic elements:
Earth, Air, Water and Hand … the latter representing the human component
of design. The concept was visualized in a series of meditative images
featuring smooth stones, open skies and rippling water.
The San Francisco-based designers, who work under the name
MARKATOS | MOORE, stripped the elements of their traditional
earthy colors and instead dressed them up in black-and-white
tones—referencing the appearance of concrete. The designers also
updated Concreteworks’ logo, which features an image based on
Le Corbusier’s sculpture Open Hand, polishing the image while
being careful to retain its meaning. Moore says Mark Rogero, Concreteworks’
founder, “is inspired by what the sculpture symbolizes.
We took the illustration, simplified it and gave it more of a refined
look.” The combination of bold, natural elements and subtle typography
gives Concreteworks distinctive stationery and business cards
with a Zen-like quality of contemplation. by Zoe Weisman
