A unique concept and strong execution come
together beautifully in this self-promotion for
Minneapolis-based Graphiculture titled
Communicata
and the Book. An elegant softcover book
housed in a hardbound slipcase, this volume explores
whether modern communication technologies
will render the printed word obsolete.
The vehicle for the exploration in Communicata and the Book is
an unfolding love story between The Book (an older man) and
The Computer (a young woman). Drama—and sexual tension—
between the old and the new carries through from the written storyline
to the photography and design of this oversized 14½ x 11-in.
volume. The result is a self-promotional tour de force that comes
off feeling like a literary classic. Art director/designer Lindsey
Gice says, “We created the book to demonstrate our combined
skills in concept, design and photo direction, as well as to share
personal thoughts about the dichotomy of literature in new technological
forms versus the more historic and emotional book form.
There is an emotional and sensory component to the traditional
book that is absent when literature is read via new technology.”
