40 SAMATAMASON
The only challenge in creating a book showcasing the
photographer Sandro, says SamataMason principal Greg
Samata, was resisting the temptation to show too much.
In addition to being an encapsulation of Sandro’s life and
work,
About Face serves as an installment in what has
been a lengthy succession of promotional works for Sandro
by SamataMason.
Here, the goal was to show the flexibility and variety of Sandro’s
work in a smaller form, one that complements the intimacy of
his portraiture. Samata notes, “It had to be something everybody
could relate to. You can see it on somebody’s desk. These are the
projects you want people to see themselves in. You want the art
director to pick it up and say, ‘I want to do that.’” Investing more
time than in previous projects with Sandro, SamataMason’s main
goal was to allow the artist’s personal style to show through. So
the designers chose a flamboyant pink for the dust jacket/binding
and inset paper and left the rest up to the photographer. It’s
impossible to handle this book without wanting to know more
about its subjects. So in a sense, it serves as the perfect opening
course to a life’s work. by Marlena Bishop
