Working with Heath Ceramics, the renowned California
tableware company, Volume principals Adam
Brodsley and Eric Heiman ran into a few challenges.
“How do we pull together a book for a company that’s
been around for over 60 years, with no identity and no
story?” says Brodsley. Scouring a dusty back room on
location at Heath, the two found forgotten pieces of
pottery, archival proofs and photographs.
Their objective was to create a straightforward book for a small
family company, a book that would display both the history and
breadth of Heath’s work. With paper stock that alternates matte
to glossy and the exposed board of the cover, the book materials
themselves mimic unglazed and glazed pottery. Heath Ceramics—
the Complexity of Simplicity echoes the company’s craftsmanship
and recounts the Heath legacy from founder Edith Heath to
present-day owners Catherine Bailey and Robin Petravic. “The
book needed to reflect modernity and [Heath’s] tactile approach
to the industry. Everything we did for them fused three elements:
modernity, craft and history or story,” recalls Heiman.
