STEP INSIDE
As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

DESIGN 100: Editorial | Book Design (cont'd)

37 50 LESSONS
For this run of business-minded publications, Harvard Business School Press teamed up with 50 Lessons, which describes itself as offering the world’s leading business library. More like serial publications than books, these texts share compelling stories to help today’s business leaders guide their organizations as they grapple with issues like managing change and conflict.

“The small trim size and ability for separate pieces to stand alone or create a whole allows for the stacking and collecting of these small mementos,” says art director Stephani Finks. By employing semiotic imagery, designer Roberto de Vicq de Cumptich produces a firm relationship between content (the anthropological interview and smart business theory) and style, visually reiterating the title themes via associated imagery. This approach is echoed in intimate typographic details that pepper the text. And the results exemplify Fink’s concept-driven design philosophy: “It’s not just about looking good. It needs to work.” by Jaime Groetsema
