It took what creative director Matt Rollins calls “a leap
of faith” for the architectural firm Cooper Carry to
endorse the proposal that brought about
HERE magazine.
“Architecture as it relates to everything else in
the world” is how Rollins summarizes the perspective
of this annual publication, adding that
HERE also reflects the many specialties and opinions present in the
client’s practice.
Superficially, HERE may seem to have similarities to Herman
Miller’s SEE magazine (also a winner in this year’s STEP 100). But
HERE’s distinctive voice is evident in its first pages, especially in
the way graphics and images extract key facts from articles. Playfully
mimicking scientific infographics, these exercises reflect the
designers’ “fascination with putting all the facts in one place so
people can digest them in a glance,” in Rollins’ words. The magazine’s
varied content, developed collaboratively by Iconologic and
Cooper Carry, also allows staff members on both sides to stretch
their creative boundaries. “HERE functions as a sort of feedback
mechanism for Cooper Carry,” Rollins says. “It gives license for
younger people in the firm to be innovative. That’s very satisfying
to see.” by Tom Biederbeck
