As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

Herman Miller’s SEE magazine was developed to support the acclaimed furniture company’s long-standing position as a leader in design, research and knowledge of the built environment. Each issue of SEE is developed around a compelling, universal theme that links human performance and creativity to environments.

For the fifth and sixth issues, the themes are “Balance” and “Purpose,” respectively. With a creative brief to spotlight Herman Miller’s brand dimensions of being spirited, purposeful and human, designers Cahan & Associates—collaborating with Herman Miller’s team—consistently create a magazine that delights the reader in new and unexpected ways. “We rely heavily on metaphors and ideas that are not immediately obvious, giving the magazine an artful yet intellectual air,” explains creative director Bill Cahan. “At first glance it can feel intimidating, but through spending more time, the relationship between the words and the visuals becomes apparent. Every turn of the page was to build on concept, becoming very cinematic in pacing and storytelling.” Talented photographers and illustrators from around the world explore the magazine’s themes to keep each issue fresh and different. by Terry Lee Stone
