“The best description of
Good comes from its founder, Ben Goldhirsh,
who first called it ‘the magazine for people who give a damn,’” says design
director Scott Stowell. “I think it’s a lifestyle magazine for people interested
in changing the world.” Stowell is the proprietor of the design studio
Open, and
Good is one of his favorite clients. What sold him on
Good was
its Choose Good campaign.
“When you subscribe—$20 for six issues—you get to pick a charity
from a roster of partner organizations, and Good sends them
your whole $20!” he explains. Setting out to develop the magazine’s
look, Stowell and his team examined a variety of publications,
including New York magazine and The New York Times. “But
Good is also inspired by classics like Colors, Esquire and Wired,” says
Stowell. The Good community is always growing, and working
with its staff of writers, artists and designers is a constant source
of fun and surprise for Stowell. “A lot of magazines have a point of
view about the world,” he says, “but with Good we try to preach to
the non-converted, to get the magazine’s message out to as many
people as possible.” by Dana Rouse
