45 WERNER DESIGN WERKS
The challenge was to design a book featuring lip prints and memorable
kiss stories and make it desirable and special: something that would stand
out in a sea of Valentine merchandise fighting for attention. The flocked
and padded cover beckons with tactile appeal. The color palette is an interesting
combination: The addition of orange and brown—in conjunction
with the expected pink—helps it stand out in the Valentine goods
category, as well as allowing the piece a life beyond the February holiday.
Art director Sharon Werner recalls, “We were approached to
design a book to showcase celebrity lip prints and stories about
their first kisses. The book was sold exclusively at Macy’s during
the 2007 Valentine’s Day season, and proceeds benefited the
American Heart Association. The book needed to be ‘giftable’ and
something a person might want, or even covet, [even if the recipient
isn’t] interested in all of the celebrities or their stories. The
fuzzy cover is what we think really makes the book enticing; it
begs to be picked up and petted—just the thing for Valentine’s
Day!” by Sheree Clark
