Architectural plans have much the same effect as anatomical charts: In
demonstrating the structures that support their respective subjects’ lives,
they render them decidedly neutral, cold and lifeless. An exception to this
rule is architect Cruz Azaceta’s geometrically and chromatically vibrant
“plans,” which comprise the exhibition
Ambulatory: Museum Plan.
“The first thing I noticed when I looked at Azaceta’s latest work
was how the distinctive shapes stayed in my mind,” remarks
Rafael Esquer, who art-directed the catalog for Ambulatory.
Esquer, of Alfalfa Studio, translated these impressions into the
book’s visually and palpably enticing covers, turning out glossy
blue (for the front) and black (for the back) embossed silhouettes
of Azaceta’s plans that literally pop off the dark matte
background. Between covers, the “intimate size of the book, the
economy of its color palette and the subtlety of its typography”
are engineered to “allow Cruz Azaceta’s works—paintings, drawings
and collages—to tell their story in their own bold yet intricate
voice.” by Taylor Lowe
