The catalog for the Logan Collection of works on paper was
developed to bring awareness to this important collection of
contemporary art. The author of the accompanying commentary,
Kent Logan, chose to focus on drawings, stating in
his opening essay, “Their importance to us is related to the
fact that drawings often capture that first extemporaneous
thought of the artist.”
The design of Impulse: Works on Paper From the Logan Collection
reproduces the artworks as large as possible, with the uneven edges
of the original medium shown when appropriate. To facilitate
navigation, the book uses ribbons to indicate each section, while
captions are placed discreetly along the left edges of the spread.
“I previously designed a book of portraiture from their collection,”
notes Bob Aufuldish of the San Anselmo, Calif., design firm
Aufuldish & Warinner. “One of the requests was that this new volume
relate to the previous one. The size is the same and so are a few
of the typefaces used, but the grid and the way the material is organized
is different. The book is organized around thematic groupings;
each of these is differentiated by a section opening spread.
There are enough ribbons bound into the book so that each section
and the opening essay can be individually book marked. In a book
of this length—270 pages—I find that it’s especially important to
pay attention to navigation issues.” by Terry Lee Stone
