Danijel Srdarev is a prolific Croatian artist with a distinctive style and a
wide range of interests. For an earlier exhibition,
Lanterna Magica, having
to do with artistic transformations related to shadow and light, his catalog
covers were full of holes … made by Srdarev himself, calling the writer
William S. Burroughs to mind (Burroughs perforated some book covers
of his own, using a rifle).
This catalog/portfolio was created for Srdarev as a promotion
for his exhibition Theater of Drawings at Galerija Križi ´c Roban
in 2007. The principles characterizing Srdarev’s work, the
designers explain in appropriately elliptical language, are translated
into the book itself: “When examining the rhythm of his
drawings, it may seem to us that they are rather forced and nervous
pieces of art, determined by a constant need to comment
both on the ephemeral, everyday structure of life and on certain
permanent, valid situations that he seeks to share with others. Is
it some sort of opening up?” The dominant element in the book,
however, is the drawing. The art is beautifully reproduced. The
cover and jacket, with their demonstrative lines, were made
by the artist—by hand—in a practice that manages to look not
unlike a signature. by Romy Ashby
