The result is a slip-cased collection of printed case-study brochures that showcase innovative thinking, interesting design and the desire for social responsibility. “The books went beyond raising awareness about sustainable design—rather, they applied a viable solution,” asserts instructor Tom Sieu, who art-directed the project. The objective of this assignment was to move beyond the classroom and demonstrate that designers can be an integral part in changing patterns of behavior for the better.

“I chose the topic of sustainability,” explains Sieu, “because I wanted to challenge each graphic design student to think about and address bigger issues beyond what typeface to use or what paper to pick. Why not start the conversation with fresh minds that are not jaded? It’s invigorating to see them say, ‘Yeah, why not?’ Creating awareness is just the beginning.
