As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

DESIGN 100: Annual Reports (cont'd)

11 SAMATAMASON
SamataMason has been working with Strategic Hotels & Resorts since 2004. In that time, the Illinois design firm has come to understand the nuances of this client’s business and philosophy. This 2006 annual report demonstrates, in a conceptual way, all that Strategic brings to its properties and the unique position the company holds in the market.

“Chairman Laurence Geller is committed to looking at each property they invest in, existing or not, as if it’s a clean slate or blank sheet of paper,” explains design director Greg Samata. “Beauty, Service, Luxury, Insight and Flavors are the characteristics and amenities they bring to each property, to position those products to a discerning customer base.” In this annual, paper sculptures created by Richard Sweeney provide just the right elements of grace and elegance to the overall document, exemplifying, with seemingly effortless simplicity, the qualities Strategic emphasizes. “Few annual reports today are representative of ideas and concepts that management is committed to,” says Samata. Most are focused on the past and rarely are conceptual or inspirational. “This execution was more of a metaphor for how they do business,” he says. “Our relationship with Strategic is most fulfilling, and working with the wonderful paper sculptor and the typography was very rewarding.”by Dana Rouse
