As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

DESIGN 100: Annual Reports (cont'd) |
|
9 DESIGN ARMY
"The UVA {University of Virginia} Library annual serves many purposes," says art director Pum Lefebure. "It is primarily used as a tool to educate and inform faculty, students, donors and other libraries about the vast collection of material within the library, and how that material is cared for."
In addition, the annual addresses various challenges and goals the library faces, as well as the ways it intends to meet them. Lefebure and her team set out to make the library feel like a treasure waiting to be discovered. "And," she adds, "to impress all the donors and make other universities jealous." The collection in the UVA Library itself influenced everything in this book. "There was little {temptation} for us to overdesign, as the images are so strong," Lefebure says. "We just added exquisite typography and a complementary color palette to pull it all together." The client was a joy. "They're so organized," Lefebure says. "They are librarians." But there was no shushing of artistic liberty here. "They really let us push the creative and take some risks." by Romy Ashby
