7 HIRSHORN ZUCKERMAN
“Legacy’s campaigns are designed to engage, and this report had to do the same,” explains Jennifer Higgins of Hirshorn Zuckerman Design Group, creators of the annual report for The American Legacy Foundation (ALF), a nonprofit dedicated to building a world where young people reject tobacco and anyone can quit.
The gaggle of designers known as HZDG, a marketing company of 80, has had its hands in the creative game for 20 years. The company’s mission statement—Listen, Interpret, Create—shows through in the spirited detail given to the ALF brochure. “As we began to concept this report,” Higgins notes, “Legacy was celebrating victory over a tobacco company in a lawsuit that could have shut the foundation down. While this was the inspiration for the serious tone of the cover and opening spread, it was just one of many of the stories Legacy had to tell.” That strong cover statement—“The Story of the Year”—leads the reader into a variety of campaign voices and intimate portraits backed by strong colors. The careful pacing allows readers to feel as if they’re part of this groundbreaking campaign to save lives, making this one annual report that comes across not as a list of earnings, but rather a celebration of a year’s hard work done by good people. by Alyson Beaton
