As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

Despite what the See What We’re Doing portion of its website would teasingly have you believe, WAX is up to a lot more than slumber-party pillow fighting. The group’s annual report for Anderson Energy clearly and elegantly communicates the client’s stature in the oil and gas sector through simple, straightforward graphics and inspired page layouts.

WAX designer Jonathan Herman explains: “A large part of the annual is bar graphs that span across the spine as double-page spreads. To draw attention to the hard data that shows Anderson is geographically in the right place, we made them as bold as we could. Another feature of the annual that proved to be quite successful is the way we designed the property review section. Through a series of staggered sheets, each property is highlighted in an informative and interesting way."

Effectively communicating large amounts of data in an engaging way is a difficult task. Working closely with the client throughout the process led to success in this case. "Brian Dau, Anderson's CEO, has a great way of packaging and delivering a clear and concise theme that we were able to build upon," adds Herman. "They want to ensure their business message is communicated to their audiences—quickly and succinctly. For designers, it's easy to forget the courage it takes for clients to approve good creative." by Alysia Kaplan
